Geometrical and Monte Carlo projectors in 3D PET reconstruction.

چکیده
PURPOSE In the present work, the authors compare geometrical and Monte Carlo projectors in detail. The geometrical projectors considered were the conventional geometrical Siddon ray-tracer (S-RT) and the orthogonal distance-based ray-tracer (OD-RT), based on computing the orthogonal distance from the center of image voxel to the line-of-response. A comparison of these geometrical projectors was performed using different point spread function (PSF) models. The Monte Carlo-based method under consideration involves an extensive model of the system response matrix based on Monte Carlo simulations and is computed off-line and stored on disk. METHODS Comparisons were performed using simulated and experimental data of the commercial small animal PET scanner rPET. RESULTS The results demonstrate that the orthogonal distance-based ray-tracer and Siddon ray-tracer using PSF image-space convolutions yield better images in terms of contrast and spatial resolution than those obtained after using the conventional method and the multiray-based S-RT. Furthermore, the Monte Carlo-based method yields slight improvements in terms of contrast and spatial resolution with respect to these geometrical projectors. CONCLUSIONS The orthogonal distance-based ray-tracer and Siddon ray-tracer using PSF image-space convolutions represent satisfactory alternatives to factorizing the system matrix or to the conventional on-the-fly ray-tracing methods for list-mode reconstruction, where an extensive modeling based on Monte Carlo simulations is unfeasible.

Combined PET/CT scanners now play a major role in medicine for in vivo imaging in oncology, cardiology, neurology, and psychiatry. As the performance of a scanner depends not only on the scintillating material but also on the scanner design, with regards to the advent of newer scanners, there is a need to optimize acquisition protocols as well as to compare scanner ...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of Scatter Modeling of the GPU-based “Tera-Tomo” 3D PET Reconstruction
In positron emission tomography (PET), photon scattering inside the body causes significant blurring and quantification error in the reconstructed images. To solve this problem we have developed Monte Carlo (MC) based 3D PET reconstruction algorithms implemented on the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). Our implementation takes multiple Compton scattering into account without any significant addit...
متن کاملStatistical reconstruction-based scatter correction: a new method for 3D PET
Accurate scatter correction is one of the major problems facing quantitative 3D PET and many methods have been developed for the purpose of reducing the resultant degradation of image contrast and loss of quantitative accuracy. A new scatter correction method called Statistical Reconstruction-Based Scatter Correction (SRBSC) is proposed in this paper and evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations,...
متن کاملAn efficient analytical calculation of probability matrix in 2D SPECT
Expectation Maximization iterative reconstruction algorithms are being widely used in PET and SPECT imaging. The system probability matrix is usually calculated by using Monte Carlo simulations, since the analytical calculation is a rather complicated problem, especially in 3D reconstruction; however, realistic Monte Carlo simulations in 3D are time consuming and simplifications are necessary. ...
